Three years ago, when I entered college at the University of Missouri, we were presented with several different options. We could major in newspaper journalism, magazine journalism, strategic communication, photojournalism.... or this other funky thing. This scary thing. This new thing.
I went against every bone in my previously risk-averse body and chose the scary thing. And I've never regretted it for a moment. As a Convergence Journalist I have the skills to not only tell a story one way but in the best way, whether that's in print, audio, video, photography or a combination of media.
When I graduate this May, I know I'll be prepared for whatever comes my way, or at least have the tools to give me a solid foundation on which to learn, perform and innovate.
I call Chicago, Illinois home, or, to be more accurate, the much-less populated St. Charles, Illinois, a suburb about 45 minutes west of the city. Though Chicago is my "hometown," I really consider myself a citizen of the United States. I've lived in North Carolina, Ohio and New Mexico along with Illinois, and was even fortunate enough to spend a summer living and interning across the Atlantic in London.
I spent last summer working as an intern for the great folks at PBS Interactive in Washington, DC, specifically with the Engage team, doing social-media related work, and the General Audiences team. I wanted to have an internship summer which expanded my toolkit beyond reporting and into the more technical and social sides of media. I found those things and so much more.
